What to wear to a performance review
A performance review is one of the few meetings that is entirely about you: your work, your growth, your compensation. What you wear will not change the rating, but it changes the room. Dressing with intention signals that you take the conversation seriously, and feeling put together makes it easier to advocate for yourself when the talk turns to money. The goal is polished and comfortable, never distracting.
Dress one notch above your normal day
The rule for reviews is simple: one step up from what you wear on a typical day, no more. If your office is jeans and a sweater, wear dark trousers and a blazer. If you normally wear a blazer, add the tie or the sharper shoe. The point is to mark the occasion without looking like you are interviewing elsewhere, which is exactly what a full suit signals in a casual office.
Keep the palette calm. Navy, charcoal, cream, and soft neutrals read as serious and composed. This is not the day for the bold print or the statement piece that starts conversations. You want the attention on your words, and clothes that fade into the background do that job best.
Comfort is strategy, not laziness
Reviews can run long and turn tense. Wear shoes you can sit in for an hour without fidgeting and fabrics that do not wrinkle the moment you lean forward. If you are adjusting a waistband or tugging a collar, part of your brain is on your clothes instead of the conversation. Choose the outfit you forget you are wearing.
Bring a layer. Review rooms are either freezing or stuffy, and being physically uncomfortable while discussing your future is a bad combination. A blazer or cardigan you can add or remove keeps you in control of at least one variable.
If you are asking for a raise
When the review includes compensation, dress like someone who knows their value. That does not mean expensive clothes. It means clothes that fit well, look deliberate, and say you respect yourself. A well-fitting blazer from a mid-range brand outperforms an ill-fitting designer piece every time. Fit is the whole game.
Skip anything brand new. A first-time outfit carries the risk of an undiscovered problem: the shoe that pinches at hour two, the shirt that gaps when you sit. Wear something you have road tested. The review is not a fashion debut.
If the news might be bad
Sometimes you walk in knowing the review will be difficult. Dress the same way: one notch up, comfortable, intentional. It is tempting to dress down when you expect criticism, as if to lower the stakes. Do the opposite. Showing up composed when the news is hard is its own statement, and it is the version of you that you want in the room for a tough conversation.
The details that matter
Grooming carries more weight than the outfit itself. Clean shoes, neat hair, trimmed nails. These are noticed subconsciously and they cost nothing. A scuffed shoe undermines a good suit faster than anything else you can wear.
Keep accessories minimal and quiet. The watch you always wear is fine. The new statement necklace or the loud tie is a distraction. And leave the strong fragrance at home. Small rooms and strong scents are a bad pairing, and you want to be remembered for what you said.
